She noticed it in the shape of her own mornings, and once she saw it she could not stop seeing it.
Yesterday was a good day. She read, she prayed properly, she was patient with somebody who does not make it easy, she gave something away without mentioning it. By evening she was at ease with God in a way that is hard to describe and easy to recognize.
And this morning she woke up at zero.
Not in trouble. Not under a cloud. Just back to the beginning, with the day in front of her and the same work to do to get back to where she was standing last night. Yesterday did not carry. It never carries.
Sixty two years old, in church all her life, and every single morning she gets up and starts earning from scratch, and she has never once put that arrangement in front of God to see whether it survives being looked at.
If your mornings start at zero, come and sit down at this table. Nothing about yesterday is going to be totaled here.
The reset is not from Scripture
Let us look at the mechanism plainly, because it has been running since she was a girl and has never been examined once.
Something in the arrangement resets overnight. That is the whole of it. And a reset like that has to come from somewhere, and it does not come from the Bible, which never once describes God's disposition toward a person as a daily balance.
Where it does come from is ordinary life. Work resets. A tidy house resets. A weight you are trying to lose resets. Everything a person manages resets, and a mind that has managed things for sixty years applies the same rule to God without ever being told to.
You are not starting at zero. Nothing about how yesterday went is where the Father begins the day with you, and no morning has ever cleared a balance because there is no balance. I am not saying it to be encouraging. The written word says he hath made us accepted in the beloved (Ephesians 1:6), where accepted is a completed act done in Christ, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that hold at a kitchen table at first light.
What the word accepted is actually doing
Here is what changed this for me, and it is not a technique for waking up feeling better.
Read the verse whole, because the phrase most people know is the tail of a longer sentence.
To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved.Ephesians 1:6
He hath made us accepted. That is a finished action, done by God, located in the Beloved. Not renewed daily. Not held under review. And the location matters more than anything else in the sentence: the acceptance is in Him, which means it is exactly as stable as He is.
Notice also what the whole thing is for. To the praise of the glory of His grace. The arrangement was set up so that grace gets the credit, which rules out any version where a person's morning contributes.
You are accepted in a completed sense and it is held in somebody who does not fluctuate. That is written down as a finished act with a location attached, and it is the Holy Spirit who lands it in a woman who has been starting from nothing for sixty years.
Do not make grace the new discipline
Something has to be said before Thursday, because a diligent woman will now try to remember this every morning and will grade herself on how well she remembers it.
That is the same reset with better material in it. His pleasure does not depend on your recollection of the doctrine any more than it depended on your reading yesterday.
You have His settled disposition whether you wake up remembering it or not. Scripture says if we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself (2 Timothy 2:13), which rests the whole arrangement on His constancy and not on ours, and the Holy Spirit is the One who has been holding that steady through sixty years of a woman getting up and starting over.
And if this has cost more than anybody at this table knows, if sleep has gone, if the mornings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
So here is the turn, and it is not a promise about how tomorrow morning feels.
The Father said it over His Son and you are in His Son. What was spoken from that opened sky covers you, and you are not auditioning for it. The written word says as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God (John 1:12), which is a standing given once rather than a balance carried forward, and it is the Holy Spirit who holds it true about your actual kitchen tomorrow morning rather than about believers in general.
I cannot tell you when the reset stops running, or whether it goes quietly. Nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that it was learned from laundry and ledgers and not from Scripture, and that the acceptance is held in somebody who does not have mornings like ours.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the table, in your own voice. What gives these words their weight is that you are in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of yesterday. The ground under it is Scripture and the life in it is the Holy Spirit rather than merely diligent, and what God does next, and when, is His, and the outcome is His, and nothing on this page claims to know it.
- Zero I wake up at every morning, you are a reset I invented and you are not where the Father starts the day with me. Ephesians 1 says He hath made us accepted in the Beloved, a finished act with a location attached, and the Holy Spirit has never once put it under review overnight. In the name of Jesus I stop opening a new account at dawn.
- Rule I learned from laundry and ledgers, you are not what God says about me, and you are not standing in this kitchen tomorrow. Second Timothy 2 says that if we believe not, yet He abideth faithful, which rests the whole arrangement on His constancy and not on my recollection, and His Spirit has held it steady through sixty years of me starting over. I am reading the words first tomorrow, before anything counts.
- Father, You have made me accepted in the Beloved, and Ephesians 1 says the whole arrangement is to the praise of the glory of Your grace. I thank You that Your Spirit put the acceptance somewhere as steady as Your own Son. Here are Your words at the water, out loud, and here is my name after them, with nothing done yet today.
