He can tell you the exact wording, which is how you know it is real.
Not a paraphrase. Not roughly. The precise sentence, in the order it would have to come in, and who would have had to say it, and roughly when in his life it would have made the most difference.
He has never told anybody the sentence. It sounds small said out loud. That is the trouble with sentences like that: the size of them has nothing to do with the number of words in them, and a person who says theirs out loud usually watches it shrink in the air, and then has to carry both the want and the embarrassment.
He is fifty one. Nobody has ever said it. The person who would have had to is gone now, so the possibility is technically closed, and he is a grown man with a good life who feels ridiculous still wanting it.
And underneath all of that, unexamined for four decades: God has not said it either.
If you have a sentence like that, come and sit on the step. Nobody is going to ask you what yours is.
The want is not childish
Let us deal with the embarrassment first, because it is guarding the door.
A person who still wants at fifty one what they wanted at nine is not immature. They are consistent. The need to be spoken well of by somebody whose word carries weight is not a stage anybody outgrows, and every functioning adult in the world is still running on some version of it.
Scripture never treats the desire as a weakness either. It is full of blessings said out loud over people, of names given, of fathers speaking over sons, of God stopping to say a thing that could have been left implied.
You are not being childish. Nothing about that want has ever embarrassed the Father, and it has never once been something He decided to withhold. I am not saying it to be gentle. The written word says the LORD taketh pleasure in his people (Psalm 149:4), and it is stated as His settled disposition rather than as something He is careful about expressing, and the Holy Spirit holds that steady in a man of fifty one on a front step.
The verse that starts with an instruction to look
Here is what changed this for me, and it is not a substitute for the sentence you actually want.
Read the opening word, because most people go past it to get to the content.
Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God.1 John 3:1
Behold. Look at it. Stop and look. John begins the sentence by taking hold of somebody's chin, because he knows perfectly well that people skim past this exact thing.
And then what manner of love, which is a phrase about the kind and the quality of it, as though he is standing back from something and cannot get over what he is looking at. And then the naming: that we should be called the sons of God. Called. Out loud. Spoken. A name given rather than a status inferred.
You have been named out loud by God, and the Word makes the naming the very thing to stop and stare at. That is written down with an instruction to look attached to the front of it, and the Holy Spirit, not the wording, is the one who makes it land in a man who has been waiting four decades for words.
It does not replace what you wanted
Something has to be said honestly here, or this page will overreach and lose you.
What God says does not go back and put a sentence in the mouth of somebody who never said it. That door is genuinely closed and this page is not going to pretend otherwise, and anybody who tells you the divine version simply substitutes for the human one has not sat with a fifty one year old on a step.
You have a word from the Father that stands in its own right, and it neither cancels the want nor waits on it. Scripture says a father of the fatherless, and a judge of the widows, is God in his holy habitation (Psalm 68:5), which puts Him in the specific gap rather than talking around it, and it is the Holy Spirit, and He is the one who has been in that gap for forty two years without once calling the want ridiculous.
And if this has cost more than anybody around you knows, if sleep has gone, if the evenings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
Here is the turn. It is not a substitution and it is not a repair.
The Father said it over His Son and you are in His Son. What was spoken from that opened sky covers you, and you are not auditioning for it. The written word says as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God (John 1:12), which makes it a naming rather than an inference, and it is the Holy Spirit who holds it true about you specifically rather than about people in general.
I cannot tell you what God does about the sentence you actually wanted. Nobody honest can, and I am not going to hand you a tidy version of it. What I can tell you is that the wanting was never ridiculous, and that there is a sentence on the record, out loud, in words, and it was said before the Son had done a thing in public.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice. The standing under these words is yours in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of what anybody said or failed to say. Scripture holds it up, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely wanted, and what God does next, and when, is His, whatever He does with it, and no line here pretends to know.
- Sentence I have waited on since I was nine, you are a real want and you are not something God has withheld from me. First John 3 opens with behold, an instruction to stop and look at a naming said out loud, and the Holy Spirit put the word called into the middle of it. In the name of Jesus I stop reading your absence as His silence.
- Embarrassment at still wanting it at fifty one, God has never said you over me, and you are not sitting on this step tomorrow. Psalm 68 calls Him a father of the fatherless in His holy habitation, which puts Him in the specific gap rather than talking around it, and His Spirit has been in that gap for forty two years. I am saying the words out loud tonight without apologizing for the want.
- Father, You take pleasure in Your people, and Psalm 149 states it as Your settled disposition rather than something You are careful about saying. I thank You that Your Spirit made the sentence at the water a spoken one, in words, on the record, before the Son had begun. Here are Your words, out loud, and here is my name after them.
