It is the faithfulness of it that has been hardest to put anywhere.
That year he did everything he knew to do. He read, he gave, he served, he kept the hard promises, he stayed in the difficult friendship, he said no to the thing he wanted. Not to earn anything. He would have been offended at the suggestion, and he still would.
And that year was the worst one, and nothing came, and God said nothing at all from January to December.
Which left him with an arrangement he has never been able to file properly. A man cannot claim he was owed. He knows the doctrine and he holds it. But something in him, underneath the doctrine, concluded that if the most obedient year of his life was also the emptiest, then that must have been the year God stepped back.
He has never taught that. He would correct anybody who said it in front of him. And it has been quietly running under his shelf of good books for eleven years.
If your most faithful stretch is also your emptiest, sit down at this table. Nothing about your obedience is being graded here and nothing about the year is going to be explained.
Two true things that will not sit together
Let us set them side by side, because keeping them apart is what has made this unfileable.
That was a genuinely faithful year. That is one. Nothing came, and God said nothing. That is the other. Both are true. And the human mind, presented with those two, will construct a relationship between them, because that is what minds do, and the relationship it constructs is almost always a charge against somebody.
Notice what actually happened there. No verse arrived at that conclusion. No word came. A silence got interpreted, and the interpretation has been worn ever since as though it were doctrine.
You were not stepped back from. Nothing about that year was God withdrawing, and nothing that happened in it put you outside His reach. I am not saying it to console you. The written word says he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee (Hebrews 13:5), stated as an arrangement and not as a payment schedule, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that hold across a January to a December.
The one they saw walking in it
Here is what steadied me, and it is not an argument that your year was secretly productive.
Three men refuse to bow, and they say something extraordinary before anything happens to them: our God is able to deliver us, and if He does not, we still will not bow. They are thrown in anyway. The obedience does not spare them the fire.
He answered and said, Lo, I see four men loose, walking in the midst of the fire, and they have no hurt; and the form of the fourth is like the Son of God.Daniel 3:25
Read where the fourth figure is standing. Not outside with the key. Not above it. In the middle of the fire, walking about, with them.
The furnace was not canceled for faithful men. What the account records is who was in it with them, and the observer who sees it is not one of the three. They are not described as noticing at all.
You had somebody walking in that year with you, and the Word puts Him inside the furnace rather than at the door of it. That is written down as an eyewitness sentence from outside, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes it register in a man with eleven years of a badly filed conclusion.
Nothing is being added to your year
Something must be said plainly, because this is the point where an explanation usually appears.
I am not going to tell you what that year was for. Not testing your motives, not purifying your obedience, not proving something to somebody. Every one of those makes a faithful man's hardest year into a demonstration, and none of the people who say it were keeping his promises for him.
You have one claim in this article and it is the whole of it: He was there. Nothing else about the twelve months is being asserted. Scripture says whither shall I go from thy spirit? or whither shall I flee from thy presence (Psalm 139:7), asked as a question that receives no answer anywhere in the psalm, and the Holy Spirit is the One who was in the room on the emptiest night of that year.
And if that year still costs more than anybody at this table knows, if sleep has gone, if the evenings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
So here is where the whole thing turns, and it is not an explanation and it is not a repayment.
God was in that place and you did not know it. He was near you on the emptiest night of that year, and nothing that happened in it put you outside His reach. The written word says the form of the fourth is like the Son of God (Daniel 3:25), and the fourth was inside the furnace rather than outside it, and the Holy Spirit, not the wording, is the one who proves it true about your actual twelve months rather than about faithful people in general.
I cannot tell you why nothing came, or what God does about it now. Nobody honest can, and the ones who have tried were guessing at your expense. What I can tell you is that the conclusion under your shelf is not doctrine, and that the fire was not canceled for faithful men and the fourth figure was in it with them.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice. The standing under these words is yours in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of an obedient year. Scripture holds it up, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely correct, and what God does about that year, and when, is His, whatever He does with it, and no line here pretends to know.
- Year I did everything right, you are twelve months of real obedience and you are not the year God stepped back from me. Daniel 3 puts the form of the fourth inside the furnace and not at the door of it, and the Holy Spirit made the fire something walked in rather than something canceled. In the name of Jesus I stop reading you as a withdrawal.
- Conclusion I built by putting two true things side by side, you are not God's word about me and you are not sitting under my shelf tomorrow. Hebrews 13 says He has said, I will never leave thee nor forsake thee, put as an arrangement and never as a payment schedule, and His Spirit was in the room on the emptiest night of it. I am saying the year out loud tonight instead of referring to it sideways.
- Father, You were in that place and I did not know it, and Psalm 139 asks where a man could flee from Your presence and comes back empty handed every time. I thank You that Your Spirit walked in the middle of that year the way the fourth walked in the middle of the fire. Here is the year by its number, out loud, and here is one sentence to You about it.
