Most people fail the list. He did not, and that turned out to be worse.
He was given a checklist at twenty six by somebody he respected enormously. Scripture in the morning without exception. Fasting on the appointed day. Giving without being asked. An hour set aside, kept even when traveling. Confession stayed current. Nothing in the eyes or ears that should not be there.
He did all of it, for one full year, without a single break. He kept a small record so he would know, and the record is clean.
And nothing happened. No opened sky, no word, no sense of anything at all. The year ended exactly where it began, except that he was a more disciplined man with a much bigger problem.
Because there is nowhere to go from there. A man who fails the list can always try harder. A man who kept it perfectly and heard nothing has run out of moves, and what waits at the end of that road is not doubt about God, exactly. It is a cold suspicion that he was never a party to the arrangement in the first place.
If you did everything you were told and got nothing, come and sit at this table. The man who gave you the list is not going to be attacked here, and neither is the year you kept.
The disciplines were never the payment
Let us hold two things at once, because dropping either makes a wreck of this.
Every item on that list is good. Scripture in the morning is good, fasting is good, quiet giving is good, and I am not about to hand you a year of them back as wasted. That year formed something in you that you will be living off for decades.
The trouble is the small word underneath the list, and it was probably never said out loud: so that. Do these things so that heaven opens. The moment that word arrives, devotion becomes a transaction, and a transaction that does not clear leaves a man standing at a counter holding a receipt.
You are not owed anything and you are not in debt either. Nothing on that list was ever a payment, and God has never once been operating a counter. I am not saying that to devalue what you did. The written word says even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone (James 2:17), so the works are real and they matter, and they are the life of a thing rather than the price of it, and the Holy Spirit brings it to bear in a man staring at a clean record and an empty year.
The question Paul asks a whole church
Here is what changed this for me, and it is not a better list.
Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?Galatians 3:3
He is writing to people who had genuinely begun with God and were now trying to secure the rest of it by effort. Notice he does not accuse them of laziness. The opposite. Their error was industriousness pointed at something that was never for sale.
And notice the shape of his question. It assumes that the beginning was a gift, and asks why the middle would work differently.
You began in the Spirit and you are being carried by the same Spirit, and the arrangement did not change when the list arrived. That is written down and put as a question so that a reader has to answer it themselves, and it is the Holy Spirit who puts that in the hands of a man who spent a year trying to secure by effort what he already had by gift.
Do not build a better list
Something has to go where that page was, or by the end of the month there will be a revised version with the errors corrected. Longer hours. Deeper fasting. More consistency.
That is the same counter with a higher price on it.
You have God's disposition toward you as a settled fact rather than an outcome, and it did not move by one degree across the year you kept. Scripture says he that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things (Romans 8:32), where freely is the word that governs the whole sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the One who kept that true through twelve months in which you were quietly trying to buy what had already been given.
And if that year and the ones after it have cost more than anybody at this table knows, if sleep has gone, if the evenings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
Now the turn, and it is not an explanation of your empty year, because I have not got one and I will not invent one.
God is open toward you tonight, and He was open through every day of that year, because that is who He is. You did not earn this and you cannot lose it, and there is no key in your hand that He has been waiting on. The written word says that we love him, because he first loved us (1 John 4:19), and first is a word about order that no amount of subsequent effort can improve on, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true about you specifically rather than about disciplined people in general.
I cannot tell you why that year was quiet. Nobody honest can, and anyone who tells you is guessing at your expense. What I can tell you is that the year was not a failed transaction, because there was never a transaction, and that the discipline you built is yours to keep for reasons that have nothing to do with a counter.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your own voice. You speak these standing in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of a clean record. What it rests on is the written word, and what makes it living is the Holy Spirit rather than merely rigorous, and what God does next, and when, is His, in His own way, and nothing written here knows what that is.
- Year I kept perfectly, you are twelve months of real devotion and you are not a payment God failed to honor. Galatians 3 asks whether a thing begun in the Spirit is made perfect by the flesh, and the Holy Spirit put that question in the book so a man would have to answer it himself. In the name of Jesus I take you off the counter.
- Cold suspicion that I was never party to the arrangement, you are a sentence God did not say, and you are not sitting at this table tonight. Romans 8 says He freely gives us all things with His own Son, and freely is the word that governs the whole sentence, and His Spirit held that true through every quiet day of that year. I am keeping the disciplines as life and not as price.
- Father, I love You because You first loved me, and First John 4 puts the order beyond the reach of any effort of mine to improve. I thank You that Your Spirit carried a year in which I was quietly trying to buy what was already given. The paper is face down on the table, and the record I kept was never a receipt.
