Asking Permission Without Noticing

He would have told you he does not do that. He was fairly sure of it, right up until he heard the recording.

It was an accident. Somebody had left a voice memo running at the end of a meeting and he prayed to close, the way he has done a thousand times, and the file came round afterward by mistake with everything on it.

He listened to himself and heard four words at the start that he did not know were there.

If that is all right. Not as a joke, not as a filler, said quietly and quickly, the way a man says something he has said so often it has stopped being a phrase and become a sort of throat clearing.

Twenty something years. And in all of it he had never once heard himself ask permission to begin, and if anybody had suggested it he would have disagreed politely and meant it.

Habits like that are invisible from the inside

Let us be fair to the man on the recording, because he genuinely did not know.

A phrase that has been said thousands of times drops below the level anybody can hear from inside their own mouth. It is why people do not notice their own accent and why nobody hears their own um. The frequency is exactly what makes it inaudible.

So this is not a hidden belief that was being concealed. It is a piece of furniture that arrived early and was never once looked at, and it takes something external, a recording or a child or a page like this one, to make it audible at all.

You are not asking to be admitted, whatever your opening words are doing. Nothing in that phrase reflects your actual standing, and no habit of speech has ever set the terms. I am not saying it to be gentle with you. The written word says through him we both have access by one Spirit unto the Father (Ephesians 2:18), where access is a possession rather than a permission renewed per prayer, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that hold on a front step in the twenty second year.

The way that is described as living

Here is what changed this for me, and it is not a rule about how to open a prayer.

There is a phrase in Hebrews about the way in, and it uses an adjective nobody expects.

By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh.Hebrews 10:20

A living way. Not merely an open one. The word suggests something that stays open by its own nature rather than by anybody keeping it open, in the way a spring is a living water because it does not depend on somebody carrying buckets to it.

And hath consecrated is past and finished. The work of making that way is not in progress and it does not need renewing at the start of anything.

You are walking on something already finished and permanently open, and the Word calls the way itself living. That is written into the adjective on purpose, and it is the Holy Spirit who puts that in the hands of a man who has heard his own recording.

Do not now police your opening

Something has to be said before Sunday, because a man who has just heard himself will now start monitoring his first four words.

That would put a supervisor in the room and make every prayer an exercise in self correction, and a man watching his own opening is no more present than a man asking permission. Both of them are managing something instead of speaking.

You have a position rather than a script, and no arrangement of the first four words has ever changed what is true. Scripture says let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith (Hebrews 10:22), where the assurance is full rather than achieved, and it is the Holy Spirit who has walked a man in for twenty two years while four unnoticed words went past.

And if this has cost more than anybody around you knows, if sleep has gone, if the evenings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
