Somebody asked her at a table what she would want if God said ask.
She got through the first three fast. The obvious ones, the ones anybody would say, the health and the money and the person. And then she stopped, because she could hear herself, and what she could hear was a woman reading out an order.
The others were still waiting, so she made a joke and passed it on.
But it stayed with her for weeks. Because underneath the three obvious things there was a fourth thing she could not get into words at all, and every attempt came out either as another item or as something so vague it meant nothing. I want to feel close to God. Which is true, and is also the sort of sentence you write on a card.
So she has quietly stopped asking for anything much. Not because she does not want. Because wanting, in her mouth, keeps coming out as inventory, and she has begun to feel that her whole relationship with God runs through a service counter.

The three obvious things are allowed
Let us start there, because a quiet shame has grown up around them.
Health, provision, a person you love: those are not shallow requests. Every one of them appears in Scripture on somebody's lips, said plainly and without apology, and answered without a lecture attached. Nobody in the Gospels is told their request is too material.
The embarrassment you felt at the table was not conviction. It was the sound of a woman hearing herself and having nowhere to put the fourth thing.
You are not being marked down for wanting ordinary things. Nothing about that list has made God impatient with you. I am not saying it to be reassuring. The written word says your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him (Matthew 6:8), which is Him being ahead of the list rather than tired of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one that makes that hold at a kitchen table on a Tuesday.
What Scripture says actually came down
Here is what changed this for me, and it is not a better way of phrasing a request.
Go and look at what heaven actually sends in the Bible, and notice how strange the answers are.
And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was.Exodus 16:15
They looked at what came down and they did not have a word for it. Manna is not really a name, it is a question: what is it. That is what a hungry nation called the thing God sent, because it did not match anything they had asked for or imagined.
Rain on ground that had been dry for years. Bread on the floor of a desert. A word to a man who had run out of words. Fire on a mountain. The Spirit. The Son. Not one of those is a delivery from a catalogue, and several of them arrived in a shape nobody could have ordered.
You have been handed a God who does not send from a list, and He never once required you to know the name of what you need. That is written down and preserved in a story about people who could not identify what they were eating, and the Holy Spirit sets that down in front of a woman who cannot get her fourth thing into words.
The fourth thing has a name and it is a Person
Now, something has to be said about the fourth thing, because it is the reason the other three started to sound thin.
What you could not say at that table is that you do not primarily want the things. You want the One the things come from. And it kept coming out as vague because you were trying to describe a Person as though He were an outcome.
You are not waiting on a delivery. What comes down over a life is God Himself, and He arrives in person rather than by courier. Scripture says the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us (John 1:14), which is the whole doctrine of what heaven sends in one sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a live fact in your actual kitchen rather than a lovely idea.
And if the flatness has spread further than your praying lately, if sleep has gone, if the mornings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
So this is where it turns, and it is not a promise that any of the three things is coming, because I have not been given that and I will not invent it.
God Himself is what comes down over your life, and He arrives in person. You are not waiting on a delivery, you are receiving the One who sends it. The written word says that the Lord himself shall descend (1 Thessalonians 4:16), and himself is the load bearing word in that sentence, and the Holy Spirit is the one making it true about you specifically rather than about the world in general.
I cannot tell you what God does about your first three things, or when. Nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that the fourth thing you could not name was the right want all along, and that He was never running a service counter.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud at the table, in your own voice. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of how well you can phrase what you want. The written word is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what keeps it living rather than merely polite, and what God does about any of it, and when, is His, in His own way and in His own time, and nothing on this page claims to know which.
- Embarrassment at my own asking, you are a feeling about a list and you are not God losing interest in what I want. Matthew 6 says my Father knows what I need before I ask, which puts Him ahead of the list rather than tired of it, and the Holy Spirit keeps Him there. In the name of Jesus I stop reading you as conviction.
- Habit of describing a Person as though He were an outcome, you are a sentence God did not say, and you are not sitting at this table tomorrow. John 1 says the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, which is the whole doctrine of what heaven sends in one sentence, and His Spirit makes it a live fact in this kitchen. I am asking for Him by name today.
- Father, You Yourself descend, and First Thessalonians 4 puts Yourself in the sentence where a delivery would have gone. I thank You that Your Spirit fed a nation with something they could not even name, and that You never once required me to know the word for what I need. Here are my three things out loud, and here is Your name after them.
