Stopped ExpectingLuke 1:18

I Read The Promise And Felt Nothing

This message is for reading a promise I have known for thirty years and feeling absolutely nothing, and being frightened by the nothing

He has known the passage since he was nineteen and it has carried him through four separate hard years of his life.

He read it again on Tuesday, and nothing happened.

Not doubt. He would still defend every clause of it in a room full of people who disagreed. Not distraction either, because he read it three times, deliberately, sitting still, the way a man does when he expects something.

Nothing. The words went in and nothing came back, the way a word repeated forty times stops sounding like a word.

And what frightened him is not the flatness itself. It is the thought that arrived underneath it, which was: this promise has stopped working on me, and if it has stopped working, then either something is wrong with me or the thirty years were something other than I thought they were.

He has not said that out loud to anybody, and he teaches from that passage.

If a promise has gone flat in your hands, come and sit at this table. Nothing about your thirty years is going to be reassessed here.

I Read The Promise And Felt Nothing

Flatness is a condition, not a verdict

Let us take the frightening thought apart, because it has two moving parts and both are faulty.

The first part says a promise that does not move you has stopped working. But a promise is not a device that acts on a person's feelings, and its operation was never measured that way. It is a statement made by God about what is the case, and its status does not fluctuate with the reader's condition on a Tuesday.

The second part says something must be wrong with you. And there might be something ordinary going on, tiredness or grief or thirty years of familiarity wearing grooves in a passage, and none of those is a spiritual indictment.

You are not the instrument the promise runs on. Nothing about your flatness has altered a single word of what God has said, and no Tuesday has ever revoked it. I am not saying it to settle you. The written word says the grass withereth, the flower fadeth: but the word of our God shall stand for ever (Isaiah 40:8), where the contrast is deliberately between our variability and its permanence, and the Holy Spirit is the one that makes that hold at a lamplit table.

The priest who asked for proof

Here is what steadied me, and it is not a technique for making a passage live again.

An old priest is serving in the temple and an angel arrives and tells him his prayer has been heard and names the son he will have. And the priest, who has spent his life in the service of God, answers with a question.

And Zacharias said unto the angel, Whereby shall I know this? for I am an old man, and my wife well stricken in years.Luke 1:18

Whereby shall I know this. He asks for proof. A man in the middle of a divine encounter asks for something more, because decades of a closed situation had done their work in him and he could not simply switch that off.

There are consequences in that account and Scripture does not hide them. But look where he is standing when it ends: inside the story, in the temple, still the father of the child, and the promise is not withdrawn from him because he could not feel it.

You are held inside the promise whether or not you can feel it, and the Word does not revoke it from a man who asked for proof. That is written down with the whole outcome intact, and the Holy Spirit is what drives it home in a man who read three times and got nothing.

Nothing is being predicted about your reading

Something has to be said plainly, because this is where a page usually promises the feeling back.

I do not know when the passage moves you again, or whether that particular one ever does. This article will not tell you the flatness is about to lift, because I have not been given that and a promise of the feeling would just install a new thing to fail at.

You have God's word standing over you unchanged, and nothing about your experience of reading it is being announced. Scripture says the Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering (2 Peter 3:9), which speaks about His character and never once about your Tuesday, and the Holy Spirit is the one who has been at that table for thirty years of readings, warm and flat alike.

And if this has cost more than anybody at this table knows, if sleep has gone, if the evenings have started to frighten, please talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.

The breakthrough

So this is where it turns, and it is not a promise that the words come alive on Thursday.

God is not offended by what you have stopped expecting. He turns things that get written off, and your unbelief is not stronger than His kindness. The written word says if we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself (2 Timothy 2:13), which rests everything on His constancy rather than on the state of anybody's reception, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it true at your actual table rather than about readers in general.

I cannot tell you when a passage speaks again. Nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that a promise is not a device measured by what it makes a person feel, and that a priest asked for proof in the middle of an angelic visit and the promise stayed his.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud, in your own voice. The standing under these words is yours in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of what a passage did to you this week. Scripture holds it up, and the Holy Spirit is what makes it living rather than merely accurate, and what God does next, and when, is His, whatever He does with it, and no line here pretends to know.

  1. Flatness that arrives when I read it, you are a condition I am in and you are not a verdict on the promise. Isaiah 40 sets the grass withering against the word of our God standing for ever, contrasting our variability with its permanence on purpose, and the Holy Spirit has never once measured a promise by a Tuesday. In the name of Jesus I stop reading you as revocation.
  2. Thought that thirty years were something other than I believed, you are not what God says about me, and you are not sitting at this table tomorrow. Luke 1 has a priest asking whereby shall I know this in the middle of an angelic visit, and the promise stayed his, and His Spirit kept the whole outcome in the record. I am saying the frightening sentence out loud tonight.
  3. Father, if we believe not, yet You abide faithful, and Second Timothy 2 says You cannot deny Yourself. I thank You that Your Spirit has been at this table for thirty years of readings, warm and flat alike, on identical terms. Here is the thing I no longer expect, out loud, and I am not opening the book again afterward to test it.
