She still prays. That is the part people would not guess.
Every night, in the same chair, with the lamp on and the house quiet, and she has done it for four years about the same thing, and what she would tell you if she trusted you is that it feels exactly like talking to the ceiling.
Not to God who is choosing not to answer. That would at least be somebody. To plaster.
She has done all the things. She has prayed it out loud and she has prayed it in her head and she has written it down and she has said it with other people and she has stopped for a fortnight to see whether the stopping would do anything, and then started again because she could not not.
And a while ago she noticed she had begun editing. She was praying a smaller version of it. Not because she wanted less, but because asking for the whole thing after four years of nothing had started to feel embarrassing, even alone, even in the dark.
That is what a long quiet does. It does not take your faith away in one go. It makes you tidy your asking down until it is small enough to survive not being answered.
If you have been editing yours, come and sit down. I am not going to explain your silence to you, because I cannot, and because everybody who has tried has made it worse.

I am not going to tell you why it is quiet
Let us clear this out of the way in the first minute, because reading braced is not reading, and the title will have braced you.
I do not know why it has been quiet. Neither does anybody else who tells you they do.
I am not going to suggest there is unconfessed sin in it. I am not going to say it is a season, or a test, or that God is teaching you patience, or that He is protecting you from an answer you would not want, or that He is waiting for you to be ready, or that the silence is itself a deeper kind of speaking that you are not spiritual enough to hear yet.
Every one of those sentences does the same job: it hands the quiet back to you as your fault, and it dresses it as insight. You are not being punished, and this is not a verdict on you. The written word says His mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness (Lamentations 3:22 and 23), written by a man sitting in rubble who could see none of it, and the Holy Spirit is what makes that hold in a chair with a lamp on at half eleven at night.
The book keeps the ones nobody answered
Here is what changed everything for me about this, and it is not a technique.
Scripture keeps the prayers that got no reply. It does not tidy them out. It writes them down, keeps them in the book, and hands them to us to sing.
O my God, I cry in the daytime, but thou hearest not; and in the night season, and am not silent.Psalm 22:2
Read that again. That is in the songbook. That was sung, in company, out loud, by people who were not embarrassed about it, and God kept it in.
And here is the thing that ought to stop you in your chair: it is the psalm Jesus was quoting from the cross. The prayer about not being heard is the one He reached for at the worst moment in the history of the world, and He was not being faithless, and He was not doing it wrong.
You are not out of bounds. There is nothing about your four years that puts you outside what God's own book calls prayer. That is not my opinion, it is written into the Psalms and left there on purpose, and His Spirit is the one who makes that land in a woman who has been shrinking her own asking down to fit.
Stop editing it
So the first thing to put down tonight is not the request. It is the editing.
You have been making it smaller to protect yourself, and I understand why, and it has cost you something: a small prayer that gets no answer still gets no answer, and now you do not even have the honesty of having asked for what you actually want.
You are allowed the whole of it, in the words it actually runs in. Pour out your heart before him is what the psalm says, God is a refuge for us (Psalm 62:8), and pour out is not a tidy verb, and the Holy Spirit is not waiting for a better version before He carries it.
And hear this too, because a long quiet wears on more than your praying. If the flatness has turned into something heavier lately, if you are not sleeping, if you are frightened for yourself, please ring somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, or a crisis line, and the emergency services if you or anybody near you is in danger tonight. That is not a detour around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people, and using it is sense and not surrender.
So here is where the whole thing turns, and it is not an answer, because I have not got one and I will not invent one.
God has not turned His face away from you. He is near you in this quiet, and the fact that you cannot hear Him is not the same as Him not being here. The written word says the Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart (Psalm 34:18), nigh being a word about distance and not about volume, and it is the Holy Spirit who holds it true in your actual chair tonight rather than in general.
I cannot tell you when He speaks about the thing you have been asking about. Nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that the room you pray in is not empty, and has not been for four years, and that the ceiling was never the top of it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud, in your chair, in your own voice. The right to speak like this is yours in Christ and it is not issued on the strength of how well you have held on. The written word is the ground under it and the Holy Spirit is what keeps it living rather than merely stubborn, and what God says about the thing you have been asking for, and when, is His, in His own way and in His own time, and nothing on this page claims to know which.
- Four years of quiet, you are real and you are not God turning His face away from me. Psalm 22 puts a prayer that got no reply into the songbook and keeps it there, and the Holy Spirit had the Lord Jesus reach for that very psalm at the worst hour there has ever been. In the name of Jesus I stop reading you as a verdict on me.
- Habit of shrinking what I ask for, you are not God's word about me and you are not sitting in this chair tonight. The written word says pour out your heart before Him, and pour out is not a tidy word, and His Spirit carries the whole size of it without waiting for a better version. I am asking for the actual thing tonight, unedited.
- Father, You are near to the broken hearted, and nigh is a word about distance and never about volume. I thank You that Psalm 34 keeps You near the broken hearted and that Your Spirit kept the unanswered prayers in Your own book instead of tidying them away, and that You have not moved one inch further off in four years. Here is the honest sentence, out loud, and I am not adding anything to the end of it.
