He could not tell you when it started, and he has never called it a system, but it is a system.
Sunday evening, sitting in the truck outside the house, he runs the week. Not deliberately, and not in words most of the time. Something in him totals it up. The temper on Tuesday. The thing he did not do for his neighbor. The half hour with the Book on Thursday morning that was good. The money he gave. The phone call he made and the one he did not.
And out of that comes a number, and the number is how close he thinks God is standing to him this week.
Thirty years of that. A good week and he prays with confidence. A poor week and he prays like a man reporting to somebody, and he does not ask for much, because asking after a poor week seems like a nerve.
He knows the doctrine. He has taught the doctrine. And every Sunday evening the audit runs anyway, because a thing running for thirty years does not stop because a man can quote a verse against it.
If you have been running an audit like that, come and sit on the step. Nothing from your week is going to be totaled here.

What the audit is actually measuring
Let us look at the machinery, because thirty years is long enough for a thing to become invisible.
It measures a week. That is all it can measure. It has no access to anything else, and it is honest within its own limits, and the limits are the whole problem: the audit was set up to answer a question it was never able to reach.
How God is disposed toward a man is not a weekly figure. It is not a running total at all. It was settled in a transaction a man had no part in and cannot affect from either direction.
You are not being scored week by week. Nothing in that reckoning has ever moved the Father one inch nearer or further, and no Tuesday has ever changed it. I am not saying it to let anybody off. The written word says he hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities (Psalm 103:10), which is the whole accounting arrangement stated in a single sentence, and the Holy Spirit is what carries it into a truck on a Sunday evening.
The reason David gives
Here is what turned this for me, and it is not a better way to end a week.
There is a psalm about a rescue, a big one, all thunder and smoke and the earth shaking, and at the end of the drama the man gives the reason it happened, and the reason is not what anybody would expect.
He brought me forth also into a large place; he delivered me, because he delighted in me.Psalm 18:19
Because He delighted in me. Not because I was owed. Not because the week had gone well. The reason offered for the whole rescue is God's own pleasure in the man being rescued, and it is stated as the cause rather than the result.
Read that again on a Sunday evening in a truck. The delight came first and the deliverance came out of it.
You are delighted in ahead of anything, and the Word makes that the cause rather than the payment. That is written down as the reason for a rescue, and the Holy Spirit sets that down in front of a man who has spent thirty years totalling up Tuesdays.
Do not build a gentler audit
Something has to be said before Thursday, because a man like this will now try to run a fairer version of the same system, weighted more generously, with grace built into the formula.
That is still an audit, and it will still produce a number, and the number will still be treated as His opinion.
You have His settled disposition rather than a weekly figure, and it does not admit of a total at all. Scripture says he hath made us accepted in the beloved (Ephesians 1:6), where accepted is a completed thing done in somebody else and nothing about it is periodic, and it is the Holy Spirit, and He is the one who has been in that truck on the good Sundays and the poor ones on exactly the same terms.
And if this has cost more than anybody around here knows, if sleep has gone, if the evenings have started to frighten, talk to somebody real: your doctor, a counselor, a crisis line, and the emergency services if there is danger to anybody tonight. That is not going around God. It is one of the ways He keeps people.
So this is where it turns, and it is not a promise that Sunday evening feels different this week.
The Father said it over His Son and you are in His Son. What was spoken from that opened sky covers you, and you are not auditioning for it. The written word says as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God (John 1:12), which makes it a standing conferred rather than a total arrived at, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that true about your actual Sunday rather than about believers in general.
I cannot tell you what God does next, or when the audit finally goes quiet. Nobody honest can. What I can tell you is that the reckoning was never reading the right instrument, and that the delight came first and the rescue came out of it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud on the step, in your own voice. You speak these standing in Christ, and it was never issued on the strength of how the week went. What it rests on is the written word, and what makes it living is the Holy Spirit instead of just tidy, and what God does next, and when, is His, in His own way, and nothing written here knows what that is.
- Weekly reckoning I have run for thirty years, you are an audit I set up myself and you are not how the Father keeps account of me. Psalm 103 says He has not dealt with us after our sins nor rewarded us according to our iniquities, and the Holy Spirit has kept that arrangement standing through every Sunday of it. In the name of Jesus I close your books.
- Habit of praying small after a poor week, you were never spoken over me by God, and you are not sitting in that truck this Sunday. Psalm 18 says He delivered me because He delighted in me, which makes the delight the cause and never the payment, and His Spirit was in the truck on the good weeks and the bad on identical terms. I am asking plainly this week whatever the week was.
- Father, You have made me accepted in the Beloved, and Ephesians 1 puts that acceptance in somebody else and finishes it there. I thank You that Your Spirit never once ran a total on me. Here are Your words at the water, out loud, and here is my name after them.
